Where a 1:1 and a 20:1 Seed Part Ways

Put two packs of CBD seeds next to each other, one marked 1:1 and the other 20:1, and they look the same: same brand foil, same seed count, contents which no eye can separate apart. Run them side by side and they go their separate ways from the first stage and never meet again. The cause is a single gene, and the easiest way to understand what it does is to track the two packs through every step both go through: the cross that produced them, the seed, the seedling, the flower room, the harvest, the jar, the lab bench and the law. The lines used as examples throughout are taken from the range at https://calmcbdseeds.com, and that range goes 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 and a highest line at about 30 to one; the genetics holds the same whichever shop the packs come from.

Stage One: At the Breeder’s Bench

Cannabis decides if it will make THC or CBD at one position on the genome. The gene there comes in two versions: one codes the enzyme that converts the common starting molecule into THCA, the other the enzyme that converts it into CBDA. Every plant carries two copies, one inherited from either parent, and the pair sets the chemotype. Two THC copies make a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies make a CBD-dominant one. One of each makes a balanced plant, since the two forms are codominant and neither silences the other.

The balanced pack was made by pairing two balanced plants, both carrying one copy of each version. The CBD-dominant pack was made by crossing two plants which both carry two CBD copies and not a single THC copy between them. That one fact at the bench decides everything afterwards, and it is fully in the seed long before it is packed.

The Mendelian Split

Cross two balanced plants and the offspring fall themselves by the oldest arithmetic in genetics: a quarter get two THC copies, a quarter get two CBD copies, half inherit one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that means, on average, two or three THC-dominant seeds, two or three CBD-dominant seeds, and five genuine balanced seeds. The pack is sold by its parents, and for half its seeds the label fits; in the case of the other half it does not. Calm CBD Seeds states the expected split on every balanced line, so the buyer sees ahead of sowing that a portion of the plants are going to differ from the stated ratio.

The CBD-dominant pack has no such split. Each seed received a CBD copy from each parent, every plant is going to be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil applies to every one of them, within the small variation in how much total cannabinoid any individual plant produces. Breeders say such lines “breed true” for chemotype; the term means precisely this absence of surprise.

Weeks One to Four

Here the two packs appear the same once more, and the resemblance lasts longer than many growers assume. Chemotype leaves no mark on a seedling. Leaf shape, vigour, stem length and growth rate are governed by other genes altogether, and the different kinds of plant in the balanced pack grow indistinguishably beside one another and from every plant in the CBD-dominant pack.

One practical difference at this stage comes from ancestry not chemotype. Strains with strong hemp genetics, which covers a number of older CBD-dominant lines, are inclined to stretch taller and fill out more sparsely. A well-worked 20:1 line behaves like any indoor hybrid; a early-generation one may still carry the hemp in its shape. Neither tendency says a thing about the ratio in the flower.

Frost, Smell and the Wrong Conclusions

In flower the two packs start to give hints, and the majority of them mislead. Resin coverage is the usual one a grower reads, and it used to be a reasonable rule: first-generation CBD-dominant lines carried visibly less resin than their THC counterparts, a inheritance from hemp. Modern lines have largely closed that gap, and a lightly resinous plant from the CBD-dominant pack can perfectly well test exactly where the foil said. Trichome density and chemotype are carried separately.

Smell is worse. The terpene profile lives on still different genes, so the THC-dominant plant hiding in the balanced pack can smell indistinguishable to the balanced one next to it, and both can smell indistinguishable to a plant from the CBD-dominant pack. People who try to separate a balanced pack by nose in week eight are right about half the time, and that is no any better than not sorting at all.

One Place CBD Is More Forgiving

At this stage the two packs diverge in a manner that favours the grower of the CBD-dominant pack and the CBD-dominant plants hidden in the balanced pack. CBDA degrades rather gradually than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant left a week past its ideal point keeps most of its cannabinoid content, whereas a THC-dominant one in the same neglect has by then started converting THC into CBN. The cloudy rules still applies; it holds on account of the terpenes, which degrade on every plant whatever the chemotype, and a late, rushed CBD flower smells of little however good the test result says.

Stage Six: The Jar

The CBD-dominant pack can go into one jar. Every plant in it holds about the same ratio, and mixing them changes nothing anyone would notice. The balanced pack should never be handled that way. Pool its 10 plants in a single jar and the result become a ratio that no foil ever promised, skewed by which plants yielded biggest, and no subsequent test can untangle the plants that went in.

The habit that prevents the trouble is dull: cut the balanced pack plant by plant, dry each separately, number them, and test each one one at a time before the crop is mixed. It is the one point in the whole grow where the different kinds of plant in the balanced pack can yet be told apart short of a laboratory, and only for the reason that every one is at that moment in its own bag.

Stage Seven: The Lab Report

Send a few grams from every jar to a laboratory and the two packs at last become readable. For the CBD-dominant pack the reports arrive back clustered tightly near the advertised ratio, differing mainly in total cannabinoid content rather than in proportion. For the balanced pack they come back in three clusters: some plants with nearly all THC, a few with nearly all CBD, and the majority sitting near one to one. Nothing of that result is a failure; it is the bench cross expressed as numbers.

Home test kits are sold for growers who cannot reach a lab, and most show whether THC is present rather than how much. That is sufficient to separate the THC-dominant jars away of a balanced pack and insufficient enough to put a ratio to the rest, which matches the most frequent need: finding out which of the ten jars will surprise someone.

Stage Eight: The Border

The last stage at which the two packs separate is in law, and it trips growers who assumed “CBD” was shorthand for “hemp”. Most countries define hemp by a THC limit, a fraction of a percent of dry weight, and the exact number differing by country and sometimes year to year. A plant from the CBD-dominant pack making twenty percent CBD at twenty to one also produces around one percent THC, which is several times over most limits. Certified hemp cultivars are bred to hold total cannabinoid content down so the THC fraction stays under the line at harvest; CBD flower lines are selected for high output and let the THC scale with it. A shop that offers only a ratio is selling a flower line; a grower who needs a compliant crop should ask for a tested THC figure at maturity and order nothing that cannot provide one.

Past the threshold issue, the word on the foil alters nothing in the law on the seed itself. Where holding cannabis seeds is lawful and germinating them is not, the balanced pack and the CBD-dominant pack fall in the same position as any other pack. Where the plant is permitted outright, the choice between them is the grower’s and nobody else’s. No part of this article is legal advice, and the law that applies is the one in the place the seed will be sown, rather than the one where it was bought.
